RV Service Tips:  Caring for Fiberglass / Gel Coat Finish

Care of the Filon finish is similar to caring for a new car. Exposure to extreme sunlight, pollutants, and excessive moisture can cause dulling, fading and yellowing. Regular washing and periodic waxing will help maintain the glossy new look. When washing, use a mild, automotive or RV wash solution, available at your dealer, being sure to rinse off any loose debris first. Waxing the Filon areas twice a year is recommended. Wax with a non-abrasive automotive wax or polish developed for fiberglass (boats, RV’s) and follow the directions closely.

For further reference on care and maintenance, read the complete tutorial in Chapter 6 of the Keystone RV Owner’s Manual.  It does a nice job summarizing interior/exterior care and maintenance. A PDF version of the Keystone RV Owner’s Manual is available on the Pete’s RV website.

RV Q and A: RV Covers

Question: Do you recommend the use of RV covers?
Answer: Yes. Compare a vehicle stored inside to one being stored outside and uncovered for the same period of time.  The stored vehicle is clearly in better condition.  Any time you take a vehicle out of the elements, its exterior AND interior are preserved. Using a cover is essentially the same thing as putting your RV inside for the winter.  An RV cover prevents fading, debris collection, and water damage.  With extreme temperature shifts, leaks may be caused by the expansion and contraction of RV’s joints, seals and seams.  A cover keeps these exposed areas isolated until the spring when they can be promptly repaired.

Very professional service!! I see the business realizes it’s not all about the sale! Great service is so important. We are anxious to hit the road in our unit. Again, a great experience at Pete’s RV!”–Rob and Karen S. from Sheldon VT

Camping Recipe:  Campfire Pepperoni Pizza (from CampingCafe.com)

Description:
Pizza usually ranks high on the list of “favorite” foods.  With prepackaged foods it’s easy to prepare at camp on a grill, over a campfire or in a pinch, a camp stove.

Ingredients:
1 or more prepared pizza crust - like Boboli
Pepperoni
Pizza Sauce (Contadina makes one in a plastic squeeze bottle - perfect for camping)
Mixed Italian cheeses
Olive Oil
Metal tongs
Heavy duty tin foil
Optional: Crushed red pepper and Parmesan cheese

Preparation:

  1. Prepare grill or campfire for indirect cooking.
  2. Brush top of prepared pizza crust with a little olive oil.
  3. Place directly on grate oiled side down and cook for a minute or 2 until golden - careful not to burn it. Remove from heat.
  4. Place crust bottom side down on a double layer of tin foil.
  5. Cover crust with pizza sauce.
  6. Top sauce with a generous amount of cheese - you’re camping so calories don’t count!
  7. Place pepperoni on top of cheese.
  8. Cook on prepared cooking area of grill or campfire for 2 - 6 minutes depending on temperature of fire.
  9. Pizza is done when cheese is melted.

Pete’s RV Geared Up for 2012 with Keystone RV Company

December 29th, 2011 by Phil | Posted in General RVs, Keystone, Pete's News, Product News, Shows and Events, Trade Shows | No Comments »

While the RVIA National RV Trade Show in Louisville, Kentucky is the official unveiling of what’s new and exciting for 2012, Pete’s RV actually works months in advance preparing for the new calendar year.  Louisville serves as a final tune-up in preparation for rolling out our 2012 inventory.

We huddle with the Keystone RV Company sales team to go over final details on recent floorplans, features, and to get a good look at what Pete’s RV Center dealerships will be showcasing to RV consumers in 2012.

Pete’s RV VP of Sales Todd McGinnis is pictured above at the 2011 RVIA National RV Trade Show with Outback RV District Sales Manager Nick Kaiser.

As highlighted in an earlier Pete’s RV Info Blog story about our attendance at RV Manufacturers Open House in Greater Elkhart, Indiana,  RV buyers can look forward to several new refinements.  Some changes are subtle such as Passport’s updated exterior graphics and all-white skirt, and Bullet Premier’s attractive Teak interior option. Others are more dramatic:  Springdale’s interior facelift centers around impressive dark wood cabinetry, and Sydney fifth wheels stepped up their game in a big way by finally capturing the popular appeal of their counterpart, Outback travel trailers.

Joining Keystone RV’s existing lines, Vantage offers RV buyers a refreshingly different and contemporary-looking travel trailer that is sure to raise eyebrows on roadways and campgrounds.  With it’s curved sidewalls, arched roof and Euro-style decor, Pete’s RV is excited to add Vantage to their already vast selection of Keystone RV Company products.

More pictures of our visit to Keystone RV Company’s display in Louisville can be viewed on the Pete’s RV Facebook page.

Regular updates and buyer information on new Cougar, Montana, Outback Sprinter, Passport, Springdale, Raptor, and Vantage RVs to follow.  In the meantime, our inventory of 2012 fifth wheels and travel trailers is primed and ready for North American RV buyers!

Pete’s RV Cruises National RV Trade Show

December 20th, 2011 by Phil | Posted in General RVs, Product News, Shows and Events | No Comments »

A small contingent from Pete’s RV made their annual pilgrimage to the RVIA’s 49th National RV Trade Show, held Nov. 29 – Dec. 1 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville.

According to an RVIA press release, 67 manufacturers and 230 suppliers displayed 2012’s newest and most innovative products across more than 730,000 square feet of exhibit space.

With nearly 13 football fields of floorspace to cover, it is always a challenge to see everything the show has on display. However, Pete’s RV VP of Sales Todd McGinnis explains that a little strategy goes a long way in helping you to tackle the abominable task.

“We’ve been attending the RVIA Trade Show for quite a few years now. With so many innovators in the RV industry, it’s easy to get overwhelmed trying to see every new floorplan or feature. So we always do a wide reconnaissance sweep of the show first. This allows us enough time to meet with our vendors plus circle back on the things that really piqued our interest.”

Some of those points of interest included the bullet-shaped Aviator travel trailer by Forest River, impressive body paint and styling on the Sesmic toy hauler by Jayco, and consistent themes across multiple makers such as extra-large showers and multi-functional family rooms.

These innovations plus more pictures from the RVIA’s 49th National RV Trade Show are available for viewing on Pete’s RV Facebook page.

Pete’s RV eNewsletter | Fall Edition 2011

October 3rd, 2011 by Phil | Posted in Cougar, General RVs, Keystone, Pete's News, Product News, RV Maintenance, RV Parts & Accessories, RV Sales, RV Service Tips, Shows and Events | No Comments »

Welcome to our Fall Edition e-newsletter! As always, we look forward to sharing recent news, events, information and tips with our dedicated community of campers and RVers.

Sadly it’s the end of another camping season for most of us. Say it isn’t so! While Spring did not exactly kick-off bright and sunny here in the Northeast, Summer was awesome! And for you late season RVers, Fall is looking good too.

Pete’s RV Vermont wrapped up the Summer with our annual appearance at the Champlain Valley Fair and Fall RV Show. Tropical storm Irene put a damper on the fair for a few days, but there was still a nice turnout. With exhibit neighbors like Pork Chop Downs pig racing track and the dairy barn, it’s hard for us not to have a good time. Did I mention this year’s buzz food was a deep-fried Oreo cookie? You gotta love the fair!

To help prepare your RV for winter, this issue includes several helpful winter storage tips and Pete’s RV Store deals on RV covers and anti-freeze.

We hope you enjoy this edition of Pete’s RV eNewsletter and welcome your feedback. Feel free to let us know what you like about it and how we can make it even better for our community of RVers!

Pete’s RV Store: Don’t By-Pass Winterization!

Now’s the time to winterize your RV and Pete’s RV Parts and Accessories Store has everything you need to get it done right.  Our Vermont and Indiana stores are offering a Special on RV Anti-Freeze and 15% Off RV Covers (good while supplies last). If you’re not near one of our locations, order By-Pass Kits, Roof Cleaner, AC Covers and other winterization must-haves from our online store!

September’s Pete’s RV Store Gift Card drawing winners are Jay T. from Ogdensburg, NY and Michael F. from St. John, IN. Congrats!

RV Service Tips: Winterizing the Plumbing System

RV components can be damaged from the effects of freezing. Protection of the plumbing system and related components is crucial. Damages due to weather are not covered under warranty at any time. Many recreational vehicle owners choose to have their units winterized by their dealer, while others choose to do it themselves. Following are descriptions of two methods used to winterize:

1. Compressed Air (Dry) Method - Uses compressed air to blow out any remaining water in the system after draining the system of all water. This method requires an air compressor and appropriate adapters.
2. RV Anti-Freeze (Wet) Method - Uses RV approved, nontoxic, potable, anti-freeze in the system and does not require any special tools.

Keystone RV and other manufacturers commonly include an optional by-pass kit that allows the plumbing system to bypass the hot water heater, reducing the amount of anti-freeze that will be needed (by-pass kits are available at most RV service centers for a reasonable expense and can be installed during winterization). Without a by-pass kit installed, an additional 6 – 10 gallons of anti-freeze will be required.

For further reference, read the complete tutorial in Chapter 9 of the Keystone RV Owner’s Manual. It does a nice job explaining winterization of plumbing best practices. A PDF version of the Keystone RV Owner’s Manual is available on the Pete’s RV website.

RV Q and A: RV Anti-Freeze

Question: How is RV anti-freeze non-toxic?

Answer: Unlike automotive antifreeze which contains the highly toxic ethylene glycol, RV anti-freeze contains propylene glycol. It is considered GRAS or Generally Regarded As Safe by the U.S. Government and used in many consumable products such as ice cream and candy–and exactly why it should be used when winterizing potable (drinkable) water systems.

Customer Feedback

“I just wanted to take a moment and express my gratitude to all of your staff at the Indiana location. As you may be aware we drove out from California to purchase a new 2011 Montana fifth wheel. The unit was exactly as described and was in perfect condition The few minor discrepancies were fixed/replaced immediately. The folks in the service department were extremely helpful during or one night stay on your lot. I would also like to thank Eddie and Casey. They made our purchase go very smoothly and were just a pleasure to deal with. This is our third purchase of a RV and by far this was the easiest purchase we have ever completed!”–Art & Eileen S. from Greenwood, CA

RV Archives: Metzendorf Travel Trailer

We came across this vintage travel trailer during our recent exhibition at the Champlain Valley Fairgrounds in Essex, Vermont. Nobody was available to provide details on its origins, so we did a little Googling and found this neat time capsule by a Metzendorf relative on the RVUSA Talk Forum:

“I can answer some of your questions about Metzendorf travel trailers. They were produced in the 50’s and early 60’s by Martin Metzendorf of West Farmington, Ohio, approximately 10 miles northwest of Warren, Ohio. Martin (my great-uncle) and his wife had the trailers built with Amish laborers, she picked out the interior patterns and colors. They delivered most of the trailers themselves until a delivery accident deprived my great-aunt of her arm. They sold the business in the early 60’s and the trailer was produced for a few more years under the Metzendorf name, i believe they closed the doors in ‘63 but I’m not 100% on that.”

Pete’s RV Represents at RV Manufacturers 4th Annual Open House

September 29th, 2011 by Phil | Posted in General RVs, Keystone, Pete's News, Product News, Shows and Events | No Comments »

Phil LeClair, Todd McGinnis and Kris Craven represented Pete’s RV at the annual RV Manufacturer’s Open House in Elkhart, IN. With visits to Jayco, Forest River, Winnebago and Thor over a three-day span, they stepped in and out of hundreds of RVs–all staking claim as the “it” floorplan of 2012!

Internet Marketing Manager LeClair and VP of Sales McGinnis flew in to Chicago from Vermont and swung through Schererville, IN for dealership GM Craven before heading down to Elkhart.

Along the way, a plan of action was ironed out to ensure they previewed marquee manufacturers as well as others creating a stir in the industry.  From a sales and marketing perspective it is extremely important to hit Elkhart with a strategy and list of takeaways.  Otherwise, you likely find yourself wandering punch-drunk through thousands of RVs–which most first-timers do when attending this mega-event (and the RVDA National Convention in Louisville, KY!).

Here’s a few eye-catchers:

Beautiful Winnebago Ellipse Class A motorhome w/ drawer dishwasher. Solid surface countertop with funky pattern found in a XLR Thunderbolt Toy Hauler. Salem Hemisphere outdoor kitchen w/ patio system.

Click here to see more highlights in the Pete’s RV 2012 Open House Photo Album on Facebook!

As an exclusive Keystone RV dealer, it’s no surprise that Pete’s RV focuses most of their time at Keystone’s display during RV Open House. This year was no exception. In preparation for the 2012 selling season, a day and a half was dedicated to meeting with sales managers, general managers and even quality time with Keystone RV President Bob Martin (plus bonus handshake from Thor CEO Peter Orthwein).

While the biggest unveiling was for the new Vantage travel trailer line (hints of Airstream), just about every line brought something new and exciting to the table.

With 2011 winding down, Pete’s RV is looking forward to sharing more and more of what is in store for Cougar, Montana, Outback, Springdale, Sprinter and the other Keystone RV lines we carry.

Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll see from Keystone RV Company in 2012:

New Euro-style Vantage travel trailer. Definitely a new look for Keystone. New Fireside travel trailer is a field & streamers delight (easy on the wallet too). Revamped Outback Sydney fifth wheel is NOW on par with Outback travel trailers.

Click here to see more highlights in the Pete’s RV 2012 Keystone RV Open House Photo Album on Facebook!

Plus a few more tasty morsels:

  • Cougar - Several new floorplans led by knockouts 331MKS rear kitchen and 21RBS shorty travel trailer
  • Montana - New leather furniture and 6-point leveling system option available for all models
  • Copper Canyon - New look fifth wheel is looking impressive inside and out
  • Raptor - Updated interiors are gorgeous
  • Passport - New 3100RK sharp-looking rear kitchen floorplan and updated exterior graphics
  • Summerland - Spread dual axles and overall coach refresh

Finally, thanks to all of the manufacturers, the RV Hall of Fame and Greater Elkhart.  The hospitality was top-notch!

Welcome to our Late Summer Edition e-newsletter!  As always, we look forward to sharing recent news, events, information and tips with our dedicated community of campers and RVers.

The camping season is going so well we hated to call this the “Late Summer Edition”.  Even so, there is still plenty of good weather and much fun to look forward to this summer.

As reported in last month’s e-newsletter, we’re fiercely plugging away to get the Schererville, IN location totally spiffed up and in line with our Vermont dealership.  The process has been a great opportunity for several of our employees to work side-by-side as we integrate new policies and procedures.  It’s required tons of hard work and extra hours, but the end result is a strong, unified team of employees with the same common goal:  MAKE OUR CUSTOMERS HAPPY CAMPERS!

We hope you enjoy this edition of Pete’s RV eNewsletter and welcome your feedback.  Feel free to let us know what you like about it and how we can make it even better for our community of RVers!

RV Service Tips:  Toy Hauler Ramp Weight Distribution

Toy hauler travel trailers and fifth wheels are designed to carry a variety of vehicles and cargo in the cargo storage area. These cargo items are typically heavy and consideration must be given to how they are loaded. Because most storage areas are at the rear of the vehicle the biggest concern is maintaining the correct hitch or pin weight percentage. Vehicles loaded incorrectly can have too little weight resting on the hitch or pin and can become unstable when towing. Therefore, a hitch weight percentage of 10 – 15% for travel trailers and 20 – 25% for fifth wheels must be maintained. For example, if the loaded vehicle weighs 8000 pounds, the hitch weight for a travel trailer should be between 800 – 1200 pounds (10 – 15% of the 8000 pound total). For a fifth wheel this same 8000 pound vehicle should have a pin weight of 1600 – 2000 pounds (20 – 25%).

For further reference, read Chapter 11 of the Keystone RV Owner’s Manual.  It does a nice job explaining Toy Hauler best practices. A PDF version of the Keystone RV Owner’s Manual is available on the Pete’s RV website.

RV Q and A:  Rough Riding Slideouts

Question: Is it normal that my slideouts make a lot of noise when going in and out?

Answer:
Slideouts need periodic lubing. White lithium grease can be sprayed on the rack and pinion gears under the slides and then sent in and out to work in the grease. Park models (aka: destination trailers) with motor or hydraulic slides should be run in and out once a month to keep them from rusting in place. It is also sound practice to grease stabilizer jacks and slideout wiper seals at the same time.  Wiper seals can be sprayed with a special seal lubricant to maintain pliability and prevent cracking.

Customer Feedback

“The freight company delivered and installed the unit today. Please tell Alan that they are outstanding. The movable hitch they used to get our RV onsite was something I have never seen before. They put it exactly where we wanted it and cleared the unit out of shipping stuff, blocked and leveled it, hooked up the A/C, and dropped the front hook. Excellent job. I would not hesitate to use them again.”–Russ R. from South Newbury, NH

RV Service Tips:  Erroneous Readings on Monitor Panel

The monitor panel displays readings from sensors attached to the tanks. These sensors can send false readings when:

1.  Water with low mineral content. Minerals in water help conduct the electrical signal to the monitor display.
2.  Contamination-Residue remaining on the inside of the tanks after dumping (caused by normal use or putting grease, oils, etc. in the tanks). Refer to Tank Flushing.
3.  Low Battery
4.  Loose wiring connections (bad ground)

For further reference, read Chapter 9 of the Keystone RV Owner’s Manual.  It does a nice job explaining RV Plumbing Systems. A PDF version of the Keystone RV Owner’s Manual is available on the Pete’s RV website.

RV Q and A:  Water Pump Location

Question: Where is my water pump located?

Answer: The tried and true way to find the water pump is to turn it on from the camper’s control panel and listen (note: dry running a water pump for a few minutes will not hurt it).  If there is water in the holding tank, you may need to open a faucet for the water pump to come on. They do hide them pretty well, but in most cases water pumps are accessible.  Once located, you will likely need to  remove a few screws from an access panel to get to the water pump.

Customer Feedback

“I was excited to find exactly what we were looking for at PetesRV.com.  Within hours of e-mailing my inquiry, we were contacted by our sales consultant, Randal.  He was excellent to deal with. Prompt, courteous, knowledgeable, and informative.  We are located in Eastern Ontario, Canada and had many questions/concerns about this type of purchase across the border. Randal happily assisted us.  Initially our interest in dealing with Pete’s RV was solely based on great pricing.  Now our decision to deal with Randal and Pete’s RV is based on the whole experience:  Price, inventory, knowledge, customer service, and polite and courteous staff!”–Brad and Stacy M. from North Augusta, ON

Camping Recipe:  Dough Boys

“Very simple, but a classic I remember making around the camp fire. Make a stiff dough with Bisquick. You can also use a can of ready made buttermilk biscuits. Find a green stick around the diameter of your index finger. Proceed to wrap the dough around the stick. Seal off the top of the stick with dough too. Rotate over a camp fire until cooked through and golden brown (high enough over the campfire to brown, not burn!). When ready, carefully slide dough from the stick and fill with raspberry or strawberry jam. Yum-o!”

Recipe compliments of Facebook Friend Kim O. from Burlington, VT.  Her winning submission gets her a $50 Gift Card to the Pete’s RV Parts and Accessories Store.  Thanks Kim!
