Montana High Country Customer a Happy Camper

October 17th, 2011 by Phil | Posted in Pete's News, RV Parts & Accessories, RV Sales, RV Service, Web site | No Comments »

Normally we do not post our feedback letters and messages on the Info Blog.  But this one really captured the lengths we take to ensure that our customers are totally satisfied with an RV purchased or serviced at Pete’s RV Center.

As you will read, Mr. Bowman took on the task of winterizing his Montana High Country fifth wheel.  After realizing that he wasn’t fully prepared to complete the job, he phoned us up for assistance.  We happily obliged and helped him through the process.

Super job Randy!  You can read more feedback on the Pete’s RV testimonial page as well as recommendations on our Facebook page.

Pete’s RV eNewsletter | Fall Edition 2011

October 3rd, 2011 by Phil | Posted in Cougar, General RVs, Keystone, Pete's News, Product News, RV Maintenance, RV Parts & Accessories, RV Sales, RV Service Tips, Shows and Events | No Comments »

Welcome to our Fall Edition e-newsletter! As always, we look forward to sharing recent news, events, information and tips with our dedicated community of campers and RVers.

Sadly it’s the end of another camping season for most of us. Say it isn’t so! While Spring did not exactly kick-off bright and sunny here in the Northeast, Summer was awesome! And for you late season RVers, Fall is looking good too.

Pete’s RV Vermont wrapped up the Summer with our annual appearance at the Champlain Valley Fair and Fall RV Show. Tropical storm Irene put a damper on the fair for a few days, but there was still a nice turnout. With exhibit neighbors like Pork Chop Downs pig racing track and the dairy barn, it’s hard for us not to have a good time. Did I mention this year’s buzz food was a deep-fried Oreo cookie? You gotta love the fair!

To help prepare your RV for winter, this issue includes several helpful winter storage tips and Pete’s RV Store deals on RV covers and anti-freeze.

We hope you enjoy this edition of Pete’s RV eNewsletter and welcome your feedback. Feel free to let us know what you like about it and how we can make it even better for our community of RVers!

Thanks for thinking Pete’s RV!

Pete’s RV Store: Don’t By-Pass Winterization!

Now’s the time to winterize your RV and Pete’s RV Parts and Accessories Store has everything you need to get it done right.  Our Vermont and Indiana stores are offering a Special on RV Anti-Freeze and 15% Off RV Covers (good while supplies last). If you’re not near one of our locations, order By-Pass Kits, Roof Cleaner, AC Covers and other winterization must-haves from our online store!

September’s Pete’s RV Store Gift Card drawing winners are Jay T. from Ogdensburg, NY and Michael F. from St. John, IN. Congrats!

RV Service Tips: Winterizing the Plumbing System

RV components can be damaged from the effects of freezing. Protection of the plumbing system and related components is crucial. Damages due to weather are not covered under warranty at any time. Many recreational vehicle owners choose to have their units winterized by their dealer, while others choose to do it themselves. Following are descriptions of two methods used to winterize:

1. Compressed Air (Dry) Method - Uses compressed air to blow out any remaining water in the system after draining the system of all water. This method requires an air compressor and appropriate adapters.
2. RV Anti-Freeze (Wet) Method - Uses RV approved, nontoxic, potable, anti-freeze in the system and does not require any special tools.

Keystone RV and other manufacturers commonly include an optional by-pass kit that allows the plumbing system to bypass the hot water heater, reducing the amount of anti-freeze that will be needed (by-pass kits are available at most RV service centers for a reasonable expense and can be installed during winterization). Without a by-pass kit installed, an additional 6 – 10 gallons of anti-freeze will be required.

For further reference, read the complete tutorial in Chapter 9 of the Keystone RV Owner’s Manual. It does a nice job explaining winterization of plumbing best practices. A PDF version of the Keystone RV Owner’s Manual is available on the Pete’s RV website.

RV Q and A: RV Anti-Freeze

Question: How is RV anti-freeze non-toxic?

Answer: Unlike automotive antifreeze which contains the highly toxic ethylene glycol, RV anti-freeze contains propylene glycol. It is considered GRAS or Generally Regarded As Safe by the U.S. Government and used in many consumable products such as ice cream and candy–and exactly why it should be used when winterizing potable (drinkable) water systems.

Customer Feedback

“I just wanted to take a moment and express my gratitude to all of your staff at the Indiana location. As you may be aware we drove out from California to purchase a new 2011 Montana fifth wheel. The unit was exactly as described and was in perfect condition The few minor discrepancies were fixed/replaced immediately. The folks in the service department were extremely helpful during or one night stay on your lot. I would also like to thank Eddie and Casey. They made our purchase go very smoothly and were just a pleasure to deal with. This is our third purchase of a RV and by far this was the easiest purchase we have ever completed!”–Art & Eileen S. from Greenwood, CA

RV Archives: Metzendorf Travel Trailer

We came across this vintage travel trailer during our recent exhibition at the Champlain Valley Fairgrounds in Essex, Vermont. Nobody was available to provide details on its origins, so we did a little Googling and found this neat time capsule by a Metzendorf relative on the RVUSA Talk Forum:

“I can answer some of your questions about Metzendorf travel trailers. They were produced in the 50’s and early 60’s by Martin Metzendorf of West Farmington, Ohio, approximately 10 miles northwest of Warren, Ohio. Martin (my great-uncle) and his wife had the trailers built with Amish laborers, she picked out the interior patterns and colors. They delivered most of the trailers themselves until a delivery accident deprived my great-aunt of her arm. They sold the business in the early 60’s and the trailer was produced for a few more years under the Metzendorf name, i believe they closed the doors in ‘63 but I’m not 100% on that.”

Pete’s RV Service Tips: Protecting Your RV with Slideout Covers

September 30th, 2011 by josh | Posted in General RVs, RV Parts & Accessories, RV Service Tips | No Comments »

Slideout covers (a.k.a. slide toppers) are important for the protection of your RV against water damage–which leads to rotted floors and sidewalls.  They also prevent leaves, branches, acorns and other debris from collecting on top of slide rooms that damage seals and other moving parts.

Slideout covers are available for any type of RV with a slide room.  Ideally, they are professionally installed when purchasing a new RV.  However, they can be added at any time and will immediately begin doing their part to extend the life of your travel trailer, fifth wheel or motorhome.

Since they extend in and out with your slide room, slideout covers require no set up and are self-clearing.  Any debris or water that has collected on the slideout cover will simply drop off the side of the room when it is retracted back into the coach.  They are easy to maintain and can be washed whenever cleaning your roof and awning.

We recommend watching the RV Slideout Covers Video on the Pete’s RV YouTube Channel. Here’s just a few of the key takeaways from the informative, 5.5 minute video with Sales Manager Todd McGinnis:

  • Slide toppers primary function not so much to keep rain off as out
  • They extend with the slide room, so no additional set-up required
  • Slide toppers prevent falling debris like branches from tearing slide room seals
  • Available for all RV types, makes and models
  • An inexpensive investment compared to cost of repairs to replace rotted roof, walls or damaged slideouts
  • Adds only a few dollars a month when built into RV payment plans

After viewing the video, feel free to submit additional RV Slideout Cover questions to Pete’s RV.

If you are in the greater Burlington, VT or Schererville, IN area, our dealerships offer professional service and repair on most RV brands and types. The Pete’s RV Store stocks a full-selection of parts and accessories.  To learn about current sales deals on Slideout Covers and Installation, call the Pete’s RV Parts and Service Center location nearest you.

PullRite Fifth Wheel Hitch Sales and Installation at Pete’s RV

September 9th, 2011 by Phil | Posted in General RVs, Parts, PullRite Hitches, RV Parts & Accessories, RV Service | No Comments »

Pete’s RV Center is a proud dealer of PullRite 5th wheel hitches. In addition, we offer professional installation on all towing vehicle makes, models and bed types.

Product training is a big deal at Pete’s RV Center. PullRite hitches are no exception. At least once a year, service technicians, parts and sales personnel are brought up to speed on the newest innovations and installation techniques offered by PullRite.

This invaluable knowledge allows us fit your vehicle and RV with the right equipment for a safe and smooth ride!

PullRite has been designing and manufacturing extraordinary hitches for over 30 years. They are recognized as the leading innovator in the design and manufacture of 5th wheel hitches, short-bed truck hitches and travel trailer hitches.

Pete’s RV specializes in Super 5th, SuperGlide, and Industry Standard product lines.

The Super 5th line provides safe and secure towing with less bump and fewer accidents. Super 5th has a number of models available to meet your towing capacity requirement. Mounting kits for Super 5th range from UniversalBrackets, to heavy-duty SuperBrackets, to the ultimate SuperRails–which are removable and allow you utilize a clutter-free bed when the hitch is not in use.

Super 5th
SuperGlide

SuperGlide for short bed trucks is the true testament of PullRite’s innovation and engineering expertise. SuperGlide automatically–not manually- moves the trailer away from the cab while making turns- allowing up to 90° turning without stopping, slowing down or even thinking about the space between the truck and trailer. It automatically returns the hitch and trailer to the safe towing position over the truck axle when the turn is completed.  Mounting kits for SuperGlide are similar to Super 5th with an additional “No Rail” system made for PullRite’s heaviest capacity hitch.  One other piece, a Capture Plate, is installed on the king pin box and isolates any turning on the king pin (the turning is done via SuperGlide’s Cam Assembly).  Quick Connect Capture Plates are available in Multi-Fit and Universal sizes.

The Industry Standard line is designed to fit competitor’s base rails allowing you to dispatch the old hitch and replace it with a Super 5th or SuperGlide in a cost-effective manner.  Now that’s forward thinking!

Super 5th and SuperGlide hitches are manufactured with the following features:

  • Rotary Gear Driven Latch - Wraps 140° around the king pin to reduce chucking
  • Automatic Locking Handle - Easy access without hanging over the bedrail or using a step stool
  • Lower Handle Design - Allows bed cover use without removing the handle or hitch
  • Tilt - Up to 14° each way reduces truck frame stress when hooking and unhooking

PullRite hitches are available at all Pete’s RV Center locationsContact us for Super 5th and SuperGlide pricing and installation service details.

Welcome to our Late Summer Edition e-newsletter!  As always, we look forward to sharing recent news, events, information and tips with our dedicated community of campers and RVers.

The camping season is going so well we hated to call this the “Late Summer Edition”.  Even so, there is still plenty of good weather and much fun to look forward to this summer.

As reported in last month’s e-newsletter, we’re fiercely plugging away to get the Schererville, IN location totally spiffed up and in line with our Vermont dealership.  The process has been a great opportunity for several of our employees to work side-by-side as we integrate new policies and procedures.  It’s required tons of hard work and extra hours, but the end result is a strong, unified team of employees with the same common goal:  MAKE OUR CUSTOMERS HAPPY CAMPERS!

We hope you enjoy this edition of Pete’s RV eNewsletter and welcome your feedback.  Feel free to let us know what you like about it and how we can make it even better for our community of RVers!

RV Service Tips:  Toy Hauler Ramp Weight Distribution

Toy hauler travel trailers and fifth wheels are designed to carry a variety of vehicles and cargo in the cargo storage area. These cargo items are typically heavy and consideration must be given to how they are loaded. Because most storage areas are at the rear of the vehicle the biggest concern is maintaining the correct hitch or pin weight percentage. Vehicles loaded incorrectly can have too little weight resting on the hitch or pin and can become unstable when towing. Therefore, a hitch weight percentage of 10 – 15% for travel trailers and 20 – 25% for fifth wheels must be maintained. For example, if the loaded vehicle weighs 8000 pounds, the hitch weight for a travel trailer should be between 800 – 1200 pounds (10 – 15% of the 8000 pound total). For a fifth wheel this same 8000 pound vehicle should have a pin weight of 1600 – 2000 pounds (20 – 25%).

For further reference, read Chapter 11 of the Keystone RV Owner’s Manual.  It does a nice job explaining Toy Hauler best practices. A PDF version of the Keystone RV Owner’s Manual is available on the Pete’s RV website.

RV Q and A:  Rough Riding Slideouts

Question: Is it normal that my slideouts make a lot of noise when going in and out?

Answer:
Slideouts need periodic lubing. White lithium grease can be sprayed on the rack and pinion gears under the slides and then sent in and out to work in the grease. Park models (aka: destination trailers) with motor or hydraulic slides should be run in and out once a month to keep them from rusting in place. It is also sound practice to grease stabilizer jacks and slideout wiper seals at the same time.  Wiper seals can be sprayed with a special seal lubricant to maintain pliability and prevent cracking.

Customer Feedback

“The freight company delivered and installed the unit today. Please tell Alan that they are outstanding. The movable hitch they used to get our RV onsite was something I have never seen before. They put it exactly where we wanted it and cleared the unit out of shipping stuff, blocked and leveled it, hooked up the A/C, and dropped the front hook. Excellent job. I would not hesitate to use them again.”–Russ R. from South Newbury, NH

RV Service Tips:  Erroneous Readings on Monitor Panel

The monitor panel displays readings from sensors attached to the tanks. These sensors can send false readings when:

1.  Water with low mineral content. Minerals in water help conduct the electrical signal to the monitor display.
2.  Contamination-Residue remaining on the inside of the tanks after dumping (caused by normal use or putting grease, oils, etc. in the tanks). Refer to Tank Flushing.
3.  Low Battery
4.  Loose wiring connections (bad ground)

For further reference, read Chapter 9 of the Keystone RV Owner’s Manual.  It does a nice job explaining RV Plumbing Systems. A PDF version of the Keystone RV Owner’s Manual is available on the Pete’s RV website.

RV Q and A:  Water Pump Location

Question: Where is my water pump located?

Answer: The tried and true way to find the water pump is to turn it on from the camper’s control panel and listen (note: dry running a water pump for a few minutes will not hurt it).  If there is water in the holding tank, you may need to open a faucet for the water pump to come on. They do hide them pretty well, but in most cases water pumps are accessible.  Once located, you will likely need to  remove a few screws from an access panel to get to the water pump.

Camping Recipe:  Dough Boys

“Very simple, but a classic I remember making around the camp fire. Make a stiff dough with Bisquick. You can also use a can of ready made buttermilk biscuits. Find a green stick around the diameter of your index finger. Proceed to wrap the dough around the stick. Seal off the top of the stick with dough too. Rotate over a camp fire until cooked through and golden brown (high enough over the campfire to brown, not burn!). When ready, carefully slide dough from the stick and fill with raspberry or strawberry jam. Yum-o!”

Recipe compliments of Facebook Friend Kim O. from Burlington, VT.  Her winning submission gets her a $50 Gift Card to the Pete’s RV Parts and Accessories Store.  Thanks Kim!
