RV Service Tips: Power Access
The power system in your RV is only as good as the power supply feeding it. If the campground has only 30 amp service available, an RV with 50 amp service will only be able to use 30 amps of service. Some campgrounds have only 15 amp service available which is not adequate to properly run an air conditioner or certain other appliances. The best way to know what amperage is available is to email or call ahead to the campground. There are special adaptors available through the Pete’s RV Parts Store and other dealers to make these connections to campgrounds with lower service ratings (or vice versa).
For further reference, read Chapter 7 of the Keystone RV Owner’s Manual. It does a nice job explaining RV electrical Systems. A PDF version of the Keystone RV Owner’s Manual is available on the Pete’s RV website.
RV Q and A: Propane Refrigerators
Question: How in the world does a propane-fueled RV refrigerator work?
Answer: Since propane is more commonly associated with heating appliances such as a gas stove or furnace, its relationship to refrigeration is no doubt a brain teaser. Very basically, propane in an RV refrigerator is used to heat a weak ammonia-water solution contained within a metal coil system on the back of the appliance. Heat fueled by propane (in the “boiler”) causes the solution to change into a vapor, which rises and travels by gravity through the coil system. As it circulates, the ammonia vapor condenses back to liquid form releasing heat away from the refrigerator through thin metal cooling fins (a.k.a the “condenser”). Then combining with hydrogen gas, the liquid ammonia evaporates in the coil (a.k.a. the “evaporator”). This causes a cooling reaction and provides the cold temperatures required inside the refrigerator. In the final step before the cycle is repeated, water and ammonia travel downward through the coil (a.k.a. the “absorber”) and combine causing the release of hydrogen gas. The gas floats back up to the evaporator to provide additional cooling while heavy ammonia and water head back to the boiler for recirculation.

RV Archives: 1962 Mallard Travel Trailer
Sales Manager Todd McGinnis is pictured with a 13 foot 1962 Mallard Travel Trailer. On display at the RV Hall of Fame Museum, this model and size camper was popular in the 50’s and 60’s. The Mallard slept five and contained all the common camping amenities with exception to a toilet–which was not yet widely available travel trailers. Still in exceptional condition and owned by the same family for 30 years, the Mallard was gifted to the museum by our friends at Rollin-On RVs in Schererville, IN.
