We’re entering a time of year when you might be looking to take some extra time off and do a little bit of traveling. Before you consider putting away your RV for the winter, you might be able to get a few more camping trips in and fall can be the perfect time of year to do that. Not only will many of your favorite campgrounds have more availability, but there are also some unique activities you can plan.
Just make sure you adjust your planning strategy a bit to take full advantage of this experience. To help you out, Pete’s RV Center has provided some essential tips to camping during autumn. Check them out and let us know what some of your own fall-camping hacks are by contacting one of our locations in South Windsor, Connecticut; South Burlington, Vermont; or Plainville, Massachusetts. We’re happy to chat with all our neighbors across New England, including the city of Worcester, as well as Manchester, New Hampshire, and Albany, New York.
Pack & Prepare
What you pack for this trip will probably be a little different from what you would normally pack for a warmer trip. The temperatures have started to drop, especially in the night, and it’s going to be a little wetter, so you’ll need to plan accordingly.
Clothes and Gear
Make sure your packing list swaps out some of your summer clothes for the following:
- Windbreakers and jackets
- Sweaters
- Thick socks
- Gloves
- Waterproof shoes (especially if you’re going hiking)
- Scarves
- Additional rain gear
- Extra blankets
And any other gear or clothes that you’ll need for fall weather.
Food
You may also want to change the food you bring to match the season. Different produce will be more prevalent and you can even find some of these foods and local markets.
This can include:
- Apples
- Pumpkin
- Squash
- Sweet potatoes
Along with other quintessential fall recipes.
Prepare the RV
In the winter, your RV’s heating system will become more important to you and your family. Make sure it’s running properly and troubleshoot and fix any issues that come up. You may also want to add extra insulation, especially around the windows and pipes, and get your tires checked so they’re ready for the potentially stormy drives.
Look for Fall Activities
Once you’ve got your gear collected and your RV is ready to go, you’ll want to think about some of the activities you’ll be interested in doing when you’re at the campground. Some outdoor activities may not be as reliable, especially if the rain starts to fall, so have some indoor backup plans, like board games and a movie.
Of course, there are still certain outdoor activities you can enjoy, especially on some of the nicer days. This can include hiking, sport games, and you can even still pull out the grill for some burgers.
Seasonal Events
You can also search the local communities for other activities. There are usually special events tied to the season, many of which you may find inexpensive. These can be generally fall related, like visiting pumpkin patches and apple orchards, or they can be tied to specific holidays and events, like Halloween, Oktoberfest, and Thanksgiving.
These events are often listed on city calendars, so do a little digging into the area you’ll be in and look for fun things to do that you wouldn’t be able to experience any other time of the year.
These are just a handful of tips, but at the end of the day, you know what you and your family are going to love better than anyone. Plan a fall RV trip that everyone can enjoy!
