Before your next RV vacation, it’s wise to build out your family’s emergency preparedness plan. Use the following tips to make the planning easier.
Understand the Risks
First and foremost, it’s important to understand the risks of the emergency at hand. The consequences can vary depending on where you live, but some of the common occurrences are the same.
For example, hurricanes and snowstorms can cause power outages, transportation issues, and so on. Take some time to research emergency preparedness guidelines for your area so you know the risks.
Coordinate a Meeting Place
Having an established plan should be a top priority when preparing for various emergencies. Start by agreeing upon a meeting place for you and your family members. After all, you may not be together when an emergency occurs. Discuss how you’ll get in touch with one another and where you’ll meet.
Write Out the Emergency Plan
It would be helpful to have a document you can refer to when the time comes. Store the document in an easy-to-find location that’s easy to remember. Some people may prefer to keep an electronic version of the document that can be accessed on any device in a pinch.
Assemble an Emergency Kit
There are some basic supplies you’ll need in an emergency. It may be difficult to throw a kit together at the last minute, so you should assemble it beforehand and have it ready to use. The following basic supplies should be included in your emergency preparedness kit:
- Enough water for each person in the household, which amounts to about 2 liters per person per day.
- Non-perishable food items such as dried foods, canned foods, energy bars, and so on.
- A battery-powered or crank flashlight and radio with extra batteries.
- A manual can opener.
- A copy of your emergency plan and important contact information.
- Food, water, and any applicable medication for your pets.
- Other items that your family members may need such as prescription medications, infant formula, and accessibility equipment for users with limited mobility.
